Job Summary:

The Pharmacy Purchaser ensures that the pharmacy is stocked with all needed pharmaceuticals and supplies, is responsible for the cost effective purchase of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy supplies, and tracks and replenishes inventory. The Pharmacy Purchaser will play an integral role in managing inventory procedures, purchasing inventory, controlling costs and working with pharmaceutical vendors.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Places orders and handles routine purchase orders
  • Verifies order fulfillment and checks invoices
  • Initiates and implements Quality Improvement as it relates to purchasing
  • Analyzes markets to determine vendor sources and product availability
  • Remains cognizant of market fluctuations affecting prices
  • Interviews and confers with vendors to obtain product or service information, such as price, availability, and delivery schedule
  • Maintains procurement records, such as items or services purchased, costs, delivery, product quality or performance, and inventories
  • Populates inventory records for use in pharmacy and updates prices
  • Prepares purchase orders or bid requests
  • Discusses defective or unacceptable goods or services with users, vendors, and others to determine source of trouble and identify an appropriate corrective action
  • May approve invoices for payment
  • May automate invoicing and purchasing procedures
  • May transfer drugs between pharmacies
  • Always exhibits and commands common courtesy, professionalism, and respect when interacting with associates
  • Always maintains confidentiality in dealing with all clients and company information.
  • Maintains interface with vendors to ensure the procurement of high quality merchandise, expedient delivery, and dependable service at optimum price
  • Negotiates contractual arrangements between the organization and selected vendors committing funds up to authorized limits

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Service oriented with a high degree of interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to procure supplies, materials, and pharmaceuticals for the pharmacy
  • High professional ethics and standards
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of management, associates, clients, and general public.

Education and Experience:

  • Requires an associate’s degree or its equivalent
  • Holds or is willing to obtain licensure as a Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • 2 years of experience in a related field or in a related area
  • Knowledge and understanding of pharmacy software and reporting system
  • Understand and maintains confidentiality regarding patient medications and illnesses (HIPAA)
