Job Summary:

This position is for a Senior Database Engineer primarily for the SQL Server platform, with additional experience in data engineering, data modeling, and cross-platform data migration.

The Senior Database Engineer should be able to provide guidance to application developers on proper data access strategies, provide advice to all levels of the organization about how their requirements will impact infrastructure, and understand the changes to infrastructure that will be required to meet future requirements.

This job is majority-remote. That means the applicant should be able to work remotely, using standard collaboration tools, and have the discipline and accountability to get work done. A stable internet connection is required.

This is a senior-level position. That means the applicant should be able to mentor others, provide enterprise-level designs and guidance, and demonstrate the level of experience necessary to design and implement large-scale production systems.

This position will have occasional on-call responsibilities, on a rotation, and occasional after-hours deployment support requirements.

Essential Functions

  • Database Design: normalization, designing for performance, understanding the business and creating data structures to support requirements.
  • Data Engineering: Understanding how to move data from one place to another, across platforms, networks, and operating systems. Should have basic experience with Python, intermediate experience with JSON, and intermediate experience with object stores such as Amazon S3.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve issues while minimizing downtime and risk
  • Mentorship in database technologies and procedures
  • Create and manage monitoring systems to provide accurate and actionable alerts
  • Proactively assess performance
  • Capacity Planning and Scaling
  • Engineering and managing large replication topologies
  • Specification of hardware and other infrastructure for enterprise-scale projects
  • Recommend and implement technologies for database storage and transfer

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced performance tuning
  • Diverse troubleshooting skills
  • Management of large, high volume replication topologies
  • Creation and maintenance of accurate monitoring and alerting systems
  • A basic understanding of Python is required.
  • Ability to script any task for automation
  • Ability to plan and manage large scale backups and the security and redundancy of those backups.
  • Familiarity with MySQL and/or MariaDB.

Optional Skills:

A Senior Database Administrator should have familiarity with at least 1 of the 3 following:

  • Powershell
  • Bash scripting
  • Terraform
